National Insurance

Social Security is a form of tax that every employee must pay in order to be entitled to benefits, including a government pension.

Most employees pay Class 1 contributions, which make them eligible for disability benefits, unemployment benefits, maternity benefits, old-age pensions, and widow's pensions (if you qualify).

For most people, NI is your AOW contribution. NI is calculated based on your salary (ie before income tax).

If you make more than £100 a week and up to £670 a week, pay 11% of this as Class 1 contributions in 2007/08. You also pay a further 1% on earnings over £670 per week. You pay less if you are connected to your employer's SEE.

If you are self-employed, you have to pay two sets of NI. They are called Premium Class 2 (for which you are entitled to AOW, maternity benefit, disability benefit and widow's benefit) and Premium Class 4 (for which you do not receive any benefit).
